Peninha
It is
one of the highest points of the mountain range of Sintra. It is between
300 and 480 meters and provides a beautiful view from the Roca Cape to
the Carvoeiro Cape. It is involved and isolated due to the great
extension fogs during the entire year. Sometimes is quite difficult to
find far landscapes in this area.
This property was acquired by the Nature Preservation Institute in 1991.
Beyond its landscape richness it has also an important joint of
buildings, among which are the São Saturnino Hermit and Our Lady of
Peninha Chapel.
The first mentioned is the most ancient monument of Peninha, it was
built after the Conquest of Lisbon to the Muslim in 1147 and it
represents the claim of the Portuguese nation in the territory.
The second owes its present look to the efforts of Friar Pedro da
Conceição that later was buried in the chapel’s nave in 1726. He retired
there and, with the help of some friends and donations, was able to
build the chapel and the hundred stone steps, which are still today the
only access to the chapel.
